Five Years of Building
How SideSpeak evolved from a simpler small-group video meeting into an ecosystem for better conversations.
SideSpeak began with a straightforward idea: small groups shouldn’t need complicated software just to have a good online conversation. The major video platforms were becoming increasingly powerful, but also increasingly complex.
The goal wasn’t to replace Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet. It was to create a more focused option for the smaller conversations that happen every day.
The original principles were simple:
- No software downloads
- No account required for guests
- Named, reusable meeting rooms
- No advertising or meeting time limits
- A simple interface designed primarily for groups of 2–10 people
- Equal meeting permissions rather than rigid host-and-attendee roles
2021Returning to Building
The first version of SideSpeak focused on making small-group video meetings immediate and approachable. It was completely browser-based, offered one-click entry, used reusable meeting names, and featured a clean interface that kept the technology in the background.
People should be able to concentrate on one another—not on operating the meeting software.
2022Strengthening the Foundation
The next stage was about turning the original idea into a dependable platform that could support real, recurring use.
SideSpeak expanded beyond basic video meetings to include:
- Personal, Premium, and Enterprise editions
- Google and Microsoft sign-in
- Meeting history and favorites
- Reusable meeting configurations
- Lobby and password protection
- Optional end-to-end encryption
- Custom meeting templates
- A resizable participant filmstrip
- Premium Guest access, allowing everyone to benefit when a Premium member is present
The product philosophy also became clearer: the experience should remain simple on the surface, even as more capability was added underneath.
2023Making Meetings Adaptable
As SideSpeak was used for family conversations, book clubs, organizational standups, client discussions, training, and other small-group meetings, it became clear that different conversations need different supporting tools.
SideSpeak began evolving from a single meeting interface into a configurable meeting environment. Custom toolbars and specialized templates made it possible to prepare SideSpeak for a specific purpose. A sales conversation could open with one set of resources, while a standup, book club, training session, or family gathering could use another.
The meeting platform should adapt to the conversation—not force every conversation into the same format.
2024Proving Real-World Use
The platform was being used for recurring professional meetings as well as personal and family conversations. My own daily use of SideSpeak with my father became an especially important source of ideas.
Those conversations demonstrated that video meetings can be more than scheduled business calls. A meeting space can support storytelling, family history, artwork, genealogy, shared activities, and meaningful connections across generations.
Real use also revealed opportunities that traditional video platforms frequently overlook:
- Making recurring meetings easier to restart
- Keeping useful resources connected to a meeting
- Helping organizers know when someone is waiting
- Simplifying participation for less-technical users
- Giving small groups tools designed for their particular purpose
SideSpeak was no longer simply a video application. It was becoming a laboratory for exploring how online conversations could work better.
2025Extending the Meeting Experience
The focus increasingly shifted beyond what happens during the video call.
New capabilities were developed to reduce friction around the meeting itself:
- Faster access to recent and favorite meetings
- More flexible meeting templates
- Saved toolbars that could open automatically through a meeting URL
- Improved meeting security and participant controls
- Alerts connected to recurring meeting rooms
- Better options for sharing and restarting meetings
The larger opportunity was becoming clearer: people need help not only while they are meeting, but also when deciding who should attend, finding a time, preparing their thoughts, gathering resources, and following up afterward.
2026Building the SideSpeak Ecosystem
In 2026, SideSpeak expanded from a meeting platform into a collection of focused applications addressing different parts of the meeting lifecycle.
SideCircle
Helps an organizer decide who genuinely needs to be part of a meeting—keeping groups focused without excluding people who should have a voice.
SidePlanner
Collects shared availability, finalizes the date and time, and creates the corresponding SideSpeak meeting without a long email chain.
SideThink
An AI-powered thinking companion that helps someone clarify ideas, identify decisions, organize action items, and prepare an agenda before speaking with others.
Playbook
Helps organizations turn their principles, practices, and experience into guidance that can be used before and during meetings.
SmartStart Alerts
Notifies an organizer by email or text when someone enters a selected meeting room, eliminating the need to sit in an empty meeting and wait.
Participants
Uses meeting data to provide additional context about participants, including approximate location, local time, weather, and other regional information.
SideRecord
A private, browser-based recording tool for capturing a screen, browser tab, or window with audio while keeping recordings local to the user’s device.
SideSpeak API
Allows specialized applications to work with meeting and participant information, gradually turning SideSpeak into a platform on which additional tools can be built.
A New Starting Experience
Recent meetings can be loaded, shared, or started with fewer steps, making frequently used rooms feel more like familiar places than disposable meeting links.
Supporting the Entire Conversation
Each application solves a different problem, but together they support much of the meeting lifecycle:
Choose the right people → Find a time → Prepare your thinking → Organize the meeting → Meet and collaborate → Capture useful information → Continue the work
What Connects These Tools
- Focused tools instead of one enormous application. Each tool addresses a particular point of friction.
- Simple on the surface. People can participate without first understanding the technology underneath it.
- Modular and integrated. Tools can stand alone but become more valuable when connected to SideSpeak.
- Browser-first. Users shouldn’t need to install or maintain anything.
- Human-centered AI. AI helps people prepare, organize, and communicate; it does not replace the conversation.
- Built from real use. New capabilities grow from actual family conversations, book clubs, standups, and small organizations.
- Rapid experimentation. Modern development and AI tools make it possible to move from an observation to a working application much faster than before.
Five Years Later
SideSpeak remains a personal, self-funded project. That has given me the freedom to experiment, follow useful ideas, and build tools without forcing every decision into a conventional startup model.
Modern development platforms and AI have dramatically changed what one person can create. Ideas that once would have required a full development team, a lengthy specification, and months of work can now be explored through functioning prototypes in days or weeks.
But the underlying process still feels familiar: notice a problem, understand how people actually work, imagine a better approach, and turn that idea into something people can use.
Five years after it began, SideSpeak is no longer just a small-group video platform. It is becoming an interconnected ecosystem of focused tools designed to help people have better conversations—before, during, and after they meet.
